Scott and I have been looking for a house for about a year and a half now. We stopped looking in mid-October after we were beat out by the 10th cash offer. It was the house that I thought would for sure be ours, so when they took the other offer, I was done done done.
Recently we've switched agents and have started looking again.
Here are the things we look in a house in order of importance:
{Location}
Living in the bay area (just east of San Francisco) is tough as far as the housing market goes. $400,000 in the desirable areas will maybe buy you a condo or townhouse. I personally don't care to pay that kind of money and share a wall with my neighbors and have a deck for a yard. So we've moved our search to the north/east side of the east bay where the houses are cute and affordable and the schools rank higher than a lot of the other cities in the east bay.
{Open Floor Plan}
I want to entertain in my home and I like to be able to see the tv when I'm cooking so this one is pretty important to me. I love when kitchens are open to the dining area and living area, turning it into a "great" room.
{Nice Yard}
This one is more for Scott. I of course want a yard but I would be happy with fairly small yard, but Scott wants to give us an oasis, so if that makes him happy we need a yard. One for a hot tub, a place for the BBQ and some grass, palm trees and pretty flowers. Maybe even a garden.
{Charm}
As we've been looking in this particular area, we've found neighborhoods with victorian and craftsman-style bungalows and I've fallen in love with the charm. The last one we didn't get was built in 1912 and so cute! Look at this door, mailbox and tiffany-style light. Charm.
{Good Bones}
We are not opposed to a fixer-upper. That being said, I do not want a money pit. So redoing a bathroom or kitchen is pretty much the extent of any remodeling I'd like to do. Yes, I know these are very expensive, but those are the places that are important to me.
{Closet Space}
Walk in closets are not common in the area we are looking. Quite frankly closets are scarce, which freaks me out, I have no idea where Scott is going to put his stuff. ;) I dream of closets like this...
But I'll settle for this
Obviously it needs to have doors, but this is a pretty standard style closet, so we could install some sort of closet organizer to make it work.
I'm hoping that now that I've put our main wish list into the universe that the perfect little home will come on the market at the right time and price. Fingers crossed.
i love your list! we wanted open-ish floor plan, garage and basement. we got none of them! haha. funny like that. our kitchen isnt open to the living room, which i don't love but i also dont mind it as much as i thought. the boys and girls come over and we can separate which is actually cool. i do wish i had more counter space though, womp womp. and oh how i wish i had a huge closet! lol
ReplyDeletei love the idea of the open floor plan as well. it's just so inviting! i will take the decor in that living room as well!!!
ReplyDeletemmmm yes girl to ALL of this! Beautiful! Cannot wait to see more! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI think we all dream of closets like that!...so pumped I finally have a walk in closet. It's small, but it's like four times the size I'm used to so thankful I am. Good luck with the search, looking forward to see what you find!

these are all great things! While we've been looking I've become set on wanting a formal dining room. I would love to have a large closet, but I'm pretty sure that's not going to be in my near future. Whatever you guys get will be amazing because you'll make it into a home. Make sure you have a room for me! xx
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed for you girl! I feel you on the closet space situation! The houses where we want to live are all old bungalows with small closets and no garage! It's crazy to me!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on closet space! I've slowly been weaning Pete's clothes out of ours so I can have it all to myself. Muauahahahahahahahah! (Evil laugh.)
ReplyDeleteGood luck lady! Those would all be on my list too.
