Have you noticed that as you get older you become more fearful of things in your life or just life in general? When I was a kid there weren't very many things that I was afraid of, besides being kidnapped or something of the like. As I get older my list of fears tends to grow and my invincibility cloak seems to be nonexistent. I'm sure it has something to do with realizing that our mortality can be taken in an instant. As a child, if you've never experienced a death then you tend to keep on living in a happy little bubble. But if you are one of the unlucky ones and you experience tragic or sudden losses at a young age, you begin to understand how short and precious life really is. I think part of the way you can overcome your fears is by voicing them and talking out what the fear is all about. It's the first step towards getting rid of or calming that awful anxiety that drives our fear train.
So here are some of mine.
{Flying}I know there are many of you out there who share in my anxiety about flying. While it gives me anxiety, I don't let that fear deter me from taking trips. Most of the time I don't have a choice. I was traveling a lot for work for about a year and I just had to suck it up, and sometimes take a prescribed anti-anxiety, and get on that plane. I think we all know the fear associated with this. I don't want to die. Additionally I don't want fear to be the last emotion I experience on this earth. Most of the time I just have to talk myself through it and just breath. I can hold it together for the most part but if we hit bad turbulence I'm a mess. Sometimes I'll read all kinds of statistics to help me cope with the stress. Like your chances of dying in a plane crash are 1 in 11 million. Chances of dying in a car crash 1 in 5,000. Seriously how did this even happen.
{Elevators}I got stuck in an elevator for probably 1 minute about 13 years ago and I swear I never recovered fully. There are some elevators, like the one in my office building, that I will absolutely not get on alone. That stupid thing had the doors stuck open for 3 days straight. And one of my coworkers once got stuck in there for 10 minutes. No thank you. That being said, I've gotten much better about this fear. I have an elevator in my apartment building and I ride it everyday. The first day we rode the elevator Scott caught be counting the seconds until the doors opened on the ground floor. It's 8 seconds in case you are wondering. Why do I do this? Well if I feel a little stressed I know that I don't have to really start panicking until I get to 9 or 10 seconds. I should also state that I don't have a fear of glass elevators, because if it gets stuck I can still see out. Unless said glass elevator is on the outside of a building...I don't love that.{Heights}Probably goes along with the flying and mortality thing. Being up high just doesn't seem all that safe. I prefer my feet on the ground. I did go up the space needle and next time I'm in NY I will go up the Empire State Building since I didn't do it last time I was there. I let fear get the best of me on that one. {Pregnancy}This one is a little harder to admit but that's ok. I'm a little afraid that I might not be able to get pregnant. Not that I have ever tried or am even ready for that, but it's always a little fear in the back of my mind. What if, when I'm ready, I can't get pregnant. I had my annual woman appointment last week and you know how we all say 30 is the new 20. My gynecologist begs to differ. Apparently, to her, 30 is the new 40 because she told me that my grape eggs are pretty much turning into raisins as we speak and I need to consider thinking about having kids if I do in fact want them. Yes, I was verbally assaulted by my doctor. Just when I was starting to really feel like 30 was the new 20 and BAM! she hits me with that nugget. Time will tell on this one. What are your fears?
Liking up with Kathy for this weeks confessions.
I'm definitely not the biggest fan of heights, but as long as I am not on a cliff with a 200 foot drop I am fine. I hate the vertigo I get when I am up high though - it makes me think that I am going to fall to my death because I might lose my balance. Also, I would have wanted to flick that gyno in the forehead for talking to me like that, rude lady. I think there might be a wine joke in there somewhere (fermented grapes, anyone?).
ReplyDeleteI don't mind flying but I definitely have a some what fear of heights (mine is weird though) I'm really small so I always get scared someone is going to "pretend" to push me near the edge and accidentally push too hard and oops. And I'm right there with you on the pregnancy thing. I can't believe your gyno said that! Mine hasn't said a word to me about having kids yet... I wonder if she even knows I'm 30.... kinda scary!

I probably shouldn't have read the flying one today....but I totally agree! As I've gotten older I am so much more fearful of everything...who am I?! I have the same pregnancy fear - irrational maybe, but still it's there!
ReplyDeletewhile there are some who have trouble getting pregnant due to actual medical reasons, a lot of women have trouble because they put SO MUCH STRESS on themselves as they're trying to get pregnant. that stress wreaks havoc on your body and time and time again, it doesn't happen until they mentally just give up and let go of their frustration, anger, resentment etc...and bam! pregnant. that's what happened to so many people i know...tried for like 5 or 6 years and then just couldn't do it anymore so they gave up and started looking at adoption. the following month? PREGGO. another girl i knew tried for TEN YEARS and then just gave up. she got papers signed for her adoptive baby and then she found out a few weeks later that she was pregnant with twins :)
ReplyDeletethanks for linking up!

After being on BC for the past 12 years, I, too, have a fear of not being able to get pregnant.. Coupled with my delightful endometrosis and all the other body problems I have, I wouldn't even be surprised. Dog count as kid though right?
ReplyDeletewell basically everything you said. even though i have flown approx 1 million times, any time there is turbulence i get scared. i cry. heights scare me too. i always take the stairs and hate going on lifts alone, and i hate hate lifts that i can see out of them blech hate! besides death, my number 1 fear is not getting pregnant. i'm scared that when we start to try that i wont be able to. it makes me scared because i keep putting it off, and what if it takes 5 years and I should start trying now? If I wait 5 years and then it takes another 5 years I'll never get pregnant. I'm only 27. But when I asked my doctor if she could check if I was ok she said no - not until we start having trouble. I was to chicken to push her.
ReplyDeleteYikes... that plane picture is terrible! I have to admit I get a little nervous in elevators too. I always feel like its going to get stuck!
ReplyDeleteI got stuck in an elevator twice. Thankfully Im still not afraid or I would be able to go to work. I totally get the fear though. My dad who is the least scared person you will meet HATES elevators ('and flying if we are honest).
ReplyDeleteElevators and airplanes freak me out and roller coasters and pretty much anything I dont have control over.
ReplyDeleteOMG gynos suck butt.. Im 27 my youngest kid is 2 and he was all like if you want another you better get started the clock is ticking. DUDE can I get my 2 year old out of diapers first?!
PSH RUDE to the max for your gyno giving you that lecture! I too have that fear but for other reasons. I fear that my body will forever be ruined once I get knocked up (I'm so selfish I know). I've heard way too many stories of assholes being ripped, gestational diabetes and how one's pikachu is just forever ruined....but good morning to you! Lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm scared to fly for the most part. I've never been on a plane that experienced EXTREME turbulence, but enough that it scared the shit out of me. It's crazy how it can kind of dip down from it. I hate that feeling. I also HATE the take off/landing. The movie Forces of Nature ruined that one for me. What if there is some kind of bird that gets caught in the propeller and BOOM. crash. Ahh, I can't!! Also my brother is a pilot (for over 10 years) in the airforce, and just LAST YEAR i finally went up with him in his plane.... it was AWFUL!
ReplyDeleteI work in a VERY OLD GOVERNMENT building that constantly has asbestos outages (yes, you read that right), anyways the elevators are super SCARY but I am still to lazy to take the stairs haha! I am DEATHLY afraid of SNAKES. Like more than SHARKS. Oh, and most foods. Things like egg omelets, broccoli, any kind of seafood and SO MUCH MORE FREAKS me out!!
ReplyDeleteI would get the biggest anxiety attack that anyone has ever seen if that happened to me! That's why I just use the stairs at work!
ReplyDeleteI got stuck in an elevator when I was little but I remember I wasn't afraid until I saw the door closing and my dad looking freaked because he hadn't gotten in on time but I definitely agree that as we get older we get more fearful :(
ReplyDeleteThe pregnancy thing is a fear of mine too- so many years preventing it that I worry when I want it to happen it won't.
ReplyDeleteBeing stuck in an elevator for ANY amount of time would make me shit my pants!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely uneasy about flying too, but good for you that you don't let it stop you! There's way too much to see out there :)
ReplyDeleteI have no problem flying, but I cannot ride rollercoasters or stand at the edge of a cliff. I'm really no fun at amusement parks. Lol.
ReplyDeleteOmg! I can't believe your gynecologist said that to you! I have the same pregnancy fear and I'm not trying/thinking about it yet really... I think it's a common one for women. We spend so long focusing on NOT getting pregnant and then when we try, what if it doesn't work?
ReplyDeleteHeights scare me too...well more so the falling to my death part haha.
