Prevention wrap up

Happy Tuesday!

For the past year I've been subscribing to Prevention Magazine and I have to say that I love it. It's a super small magazine with lots of great health, nutrition, beauty and fitness tips. Apparently these are the types of magazines you start reading when you are in your 30's.

I thought it would be fun to do a little monthly recap of "Did you know's"  about some of the interesting things I find in my monthly issue.

Did you know that mushrooms contain high levels of Vitamin D?  They are also in season during these dreary winter months where we get less sunshine. The cool part is that you can stick your mushrooms outside in the sun for 20 minutes to boost the nutrient levels before you cook them. Who knew?!

Did you know that persimmons are a winter super fruit? I grew up with a persimmon tree in my backyard and my mom was always making persimmon cookies or bread.  If you haven't ever tried one its about time to. Persimmons are high in fiber and Vitamins A and C. Definitely go for the oblong persimmons, they are the sweet kind.

Did you know about all of the healing powers of honey?
According to prevention magazine honey is the best treatment for canker sores, clearing up symptoms in half the time of steroid creams. Honey has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory powers.
I am forever using honey with lemon for sore throats and coughs when I'm sick as well, so give that a try too.

Tips for dry skin in the winter.
-Eat more foods rich in linoleic acid like walnuts and sunflower seeds
- Use fragrance free soap, body wash, laundry detergents, etc.
-Turn down the heat on your showers
-Do not use harsh exfoliators, switch to a gentle exfoliator
- Try different ultra emollient creams and lotions or  maybe just apply a light layer of coconut oil

Hope you enjoyed my mini recap of the December issue.

  1. yes 100000% to honey. my personal favorite is Manuka honey because it's microbial and anti-bacterial...works wonders for a cough when mixed with lemon juice. i've been guzzling this and also shoving it down kayla's throat for prevention since the flu/nasty bug is rampant these days.

  8. Love this idea for a post! I've actually never had a persimmon so that needs to change ASAP and this makes me happy that I've been putting honey in my tea every night!
