Things that aren't as good as they used to be...

Ever notice how some things just aren't as good as they used to be?
It could just be the aspect of growing up and that our perspectives change or maybe it's just that things really have changed and they aren't as good as they used to be. Here is my list of a few things that I miss or have changed throughout the years.

{Airports}
Remember, pre 9/11, when you used to be able to go to the gate and greet or say farewell to your family? God I miss those days, there are so many emotions with those first or last steps. When I was a kid I had family flying back and forth from Iran all the time and while a lot of visits were sad, my favorite memories are the happy ones when we all used to go to the airport together. While I very much appreciate my safety when flying I do miss the excitement of watching family members walk out of the jetbridge.

Reminds me of this scene from Love Actually

{Kids}
Remember how we used to play outside all day as kids. We'd get dirty and muddy and our parents would yell our names to come home at dusk. These days you never see kids running around outside and enjoying the outdoors. They are all connected to a computer, iPod, iPad or even a cell phone! I get it, again, times have changed but we really need to make an effort to have kids play outside like we did.

{Hostess Cupcakes}

Yes I realize these are bad for you anyways, but when I was a kid these were delicious. The cake was moist and the topping was actually some sort of fondant like frosting. Now the topping is like wax and the cake is dry. The filling is pretty much the same but the overall taste....major disappointment.

{Men opening car doors}
These days it is rare to see a man with old fashioned manners who opens the car door for a woman. It was one of the first things I noticed about Scott and to this day, 3 years later, he still opens my car door for me and I still love it. I especially love it when we are riding with other women and he opens their door as well.

{CD's/Albums}
I might be alone on this one but when was the last time you really loved every song on a new album. Back up, when was the last time you bought and entire album instead of the 1 or 2 hits on it. I mean back in the day I would get a Garth Brooks, Reba, Boys II Men, Michael Jackson, Backstreet Boys, etc and I swear I loved all the songs. These days, I pick one or two songs and ditch the rest.

{Letters and Cards}
I'm completely guilty and very rarely send cards in the mail but I'm trying to be better about doing so. There is something so special about receiving a handwritten card or note in the mail. One of my besties always sends me a card on my birthday and I can't tell you how much I LOVE getting her cards every year. I think it's because there is forethought that is coupled with the action. I just love getting personal things in the mail.

{Book Smell}
It was definitely my choice to start reading books on my kindle but I really miss that book smell. My wrists thank me all the time but I do miss the smell and feel of a book in my hands.

What do you think? What have I missed? What are some of the things you've noticed that aren't as good as they used to be?

  1. Sigh....agree on all of these. It's almost scary how things have changed so much in our lifetime. I don't feel that old yet I now tell stories of how things used to be to ppl that weren't alive then....scary (shudder) lol

  2. I totally agree - especially with airports, although it's hard for me to remember the time before all the crazy screening! i think I miss cd's the most - just popping that into the car and and driving to college...or home from college!! Those were the days...granted I had an Ipod but still, cd's were better!!

  3. I love getting and sending personal things in the mail, one of my favorite ways to gift. Greeting cards, post cards, I'm totally that person still. I had a pen pal in 4th grade and it was always exciting waiting to see what she'd send me and thinking of what to send her. I'll actually have a post coming up on a blog swap I did last month (unfortunately it was the last one), but I'd love to do something like that again. I think that's why women like the subscription boxes so much, because you don't know what's coming but you know something is....btw books are nice but the download is always much cheaper and better for travel! #teamkindle

  6. Home Run pies. I remember they used to be HUGE and now three bites and it's a goner. What about Twinkies?? Even if I had one now and it tasted the same I'm sure it would come with a tummy ache from the pure grossness its made of.

    Oh the CD's, I looooved getting one of those and rushing home to lay on my bed (on my stomach of course) and singing along to EVERY song with the little lyrics booklet in hand. The BEST!

    I miss sitcoms, good ole fashioned tv. NOT a fan of this reality TV crap, no thanks! And what I miss the most....the days when texting didn't exist. That was bliss :)

  7. I think this is my fave blog post to date! I got the full John Legend and John Mayer album and LOVE both, but I do know what you mean about just leaving an album on without having to skip. Opening the door is a MUST!! If I have a son he will for sure be opening doors and allowing women to exit before. I also want them to the half stand when a woman arrives at or leaves a table.

    I also miss getting letters in the mail and the smell of books. We need to get library cards so we can just rent the books and use the kindle for travel or something.
