Social Media Rant

I'm becoming very indifferent about social media (except blogging of course). This isn't the first time this has happened to me but lately, as I'm blogging more, I've been noticing my social media habits and those of the people I follow and am friends with. I'm on facebook and instragram, but I don't tweet. It just wasn't ever anything I got into and now I'm honestly not that interested. Should I be? Not that I'll join, but just curious.

Here is the thing, I have maybe 200 friends on facebook. I went through a major purge a few years back because I was tired of seeing peoples feed when we had absolutely no interaction in REAL life. "Why am I friends with you again?" I'd ask myself and then I'd proceed to click on remove from friends. I just hate that when I look at facebook, sometimes I feel bad about my GREAT life because I think maybe someone has it better. Dumb thoughts, but they subconsciously sneak their way in. Then I remind myself that probably 90% of us use facebook to brag about the great things we are doing in life but of course we aren't posting all the other garbage that happens in our lives, because hell, what would people think of us. No, instead we post about the amazing vacations we are on, our new house, our most recent DIY project or the posh restauarant we are at.
It probably is pretty awesome if you actually were in each moment instead of on fb documenting it.
But what happens when one day (hopefully none of these happen) you lose your job, break up with your boyfriend (or just have a giant nasty fight with them) or God forbid, lose a loved one. Most of us shy away from social media, to avoid the questions and comments (even when thery are words of support). This just isn't a side that we share publicly especially not when the wound is fresh. Now there are some exceptions to this rule. It's the "It's complicated" types we all know. Constantly changing their relationship status from "in a relationship" to "single". Then all the $hit talking starts about the ex and all their friends chime in and next thing you know "in a relationship". Don't be one of these. In fact just ignore that whole area of the "about me" portion of your page just to avoid the possibilty of this scene.

Here's another thing, here we are on facebook and Instagram with our hundreds of friends and followers and we post a photo or status and we get 10-20 likes. Hmm...ok, well mabye I don't show up on everyone's feed or ya I guess that post wasn't that interesting...oh well. I see it all the time, especially recently, people's "likes" number are not as high as they used to be. But observe when one of our friends with the typical 10-20 likes gets engaged.  It's like a like explosion. All of the stalkers come out of the woodwork and toss out a like to the newly engaged couple. Don't get me wrong this is fantastic and very well deserved, but where the hell have these people been all these years through all these other posts. They just proved that said person shows up in their news feed, but basically decided that they are only going to throw a like their way because they're engaged. Come on people, if you are going to follow or be friends with people why not throw some likes their way when you see it in the news feed. That's why we are all on these things isn't it? To watch that little number next to the thumbs up grow as the hours tick by.

One more rant and then I swear I'll close out. For awhile I was following a few celebrities on Instagram and I see their 100k+ likes and 500 comments and do you think they ever once comment on one of their fans/followers photos? Hell no they don't, they don't even think twice about any of their followers so why should I waste any of my time and energy looking at their garbage. UNFOLLOW. You know what I'd love to see? Just for one day, I would love to challenge everyone to not comment on the Bieber and Kardashians of the world. Do not give them your time and let's see if they even notice. Then ask yourself, what is the point? And maybe, just maybe uncheck that "following" button and follow only the real people in your life.

Here is my philosophy right now, if I follow you and you follow me, I'm going to send some likes and comments your way, because that is the point of this whole song and dance; to interact with people and send positive encouragement vibes etc. Not just to receive likes and comments but to give them too. I love the feeling of getting comments on my blog, facebook and instagram posts so I pay it forward and I read blogs, like posts and comment on photos because that is the type of person I am. I like to think of it as a sort of loyalty or respect. You don't have to like or comment on everything but every once in awhile just stop in for a like or hello. Happy socail media-ing and thanks for listening.

End Rant
(wew that was a long one)

  1. Everyone needs a good social media rant! I am totally becoming increasingly anti-FB for a number of reasons and have been contemplating a break for the past month. I'll have to keep your blog bookmarked so I can still read it...and comment. ;)
