Sisters Sisters, there were never such devoted sisters...

How do you even begin to write a piece about your sister? So many years, so much history; nights spent laughing until our cheeks hurt, telling little white lie's to our parent's insuring that we wouldn't get caught, slumber parties as adults and sharing the love of a daughter/niece and a son/nephew. There is nothing quite like having a sister, especially one who is also your best friend. Sisters are your most trusted confidant, the protector of your heart, the keepers of your secrets and the laugh to your smile.
Some of my best memories in life are memories made with her. We've seen Googoosh (best persian singer ever) 3 times together just us two; singing Kavir at the top of our lungs and dancing the night away. Any night at Stanford's with a Lavender Cosmo is an experience in itself; especially when Talia is licking the sugar rim off of her empty Martini glass. We love all of the same movies, most importantly White Christmas. A holiday tradition complete with a song about us.

I've learned so much from her over the years, starting with the proper or improper way of saying f**k. HA! When I was about 10, I heard Tali say this word in the garage. One day I got pissed and decided it was ok to use the word in front of my mom. Val obviously did not share the same sentiment. She chased me around the house, pinned me down and tried to put a pinch of pepper in my mouth. To get her off of me I faked that she go it in my eye. Not only did I say the "f" word, I also lied to my mom to make her feel bad. Geez, what a little nightmare. To this day when this story comes up Val still feels awful about that day and every time I tell her that I was being a little liar and no pepper got in my eye or my mouth for that matter.  She still doesn't believe me. (Mom, if you are reading this it's true, no pepper in my eye or mouth, rest easy...please) Talia still tends to deny telling me that word in the garage. See she taught me to swear and lie. Kidding sister.

In all seriousness, she has paved the way for me in life. Being the older sister is the most difficult. You fall in all the pot holes and learn everything the hard way while the little sister learns from all your mistakes and gets hailed as the little angel, except when she says the work f**k of course. And of course as I type this Tali responds to my facebook post from this morning. Excuse me while I digress, here is the post:

SHE ADMITS IT!!!
I meant everything I said in this post to my sister. She is an amazing mother and one day I hope to once again follow her lead.

Happy Birthday Talia Joon! I love you!!

Her dancing abilities started early

Always shocking the hell out of Val. HA!

  1. I think this is just the right poem for you Hooshmand Sisters, a little something from E. E. Cummings:

[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
    i fear
no fate (for you are my fate,my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
